Activist's death under investigation

EUREKA - Humboldt County Sheriff's Department officials will take aerial
photos today as part of their investigation into the death of an
environmental activist last week, Sheriff Dennis Lewis said Monday.

David Chain, 24, of Texas, was crushed by a tree last week near Grizzly
Creek State Park. Chain was with other Earth First activists protesting
what the environmental group said is illegal logging.

Pacific Lumber Co. officials said Chain's death was accidental and the
loggers didn't know anyone was there when they cut the tree that killed
him. Earth First activists have said the loggers knew they were there
and were falling trees in the activists' direction. However, they agree
the loggers never meant to hurt anyone.

PL is also conducting its own investigation, spokewoman Mary Bullwinkle
said Monday.
